Slavery and Salem Maritime Tour

Date & Time

Friday, September 16, 2022

Time(s):

10:00 am to 11:30 am

Description

Essex County’s profit from and dependence on slavery is still a story not well known. A growing body of research demythologizes New England as a place of liberation and instead reveals a place where thousands of people were held in bondage. This walking tour sheds light on the slave economy, the lived experiences of people of African descent including enslaved people’s resistance. By better understanding the history of this former site of enslavement, we can better work to undo the legacies of oppression that impact all of us today.
