Rope; used for rigging on ships was a maritime necessity but was also needed in everyday life. When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published his poem ‘The Ropewalk’ in 1858 nearly every seaport had a building dedicated to making rope. The sights, smells, and sounds of rope making were an everyday part of a working waterfront. Join the Park Rangers at the Salem Armory Visitor Center to learn how to make rope like the sailors did during the Age of Sail and earn a Junior Ranger badge.
