Description

DIY Hike: This hike of the Powow Hill Greenspace is an opportunity to explore Amesbury’s urban forest, located within walking distance of the restaurants and shops in the heart of the city. The approximately hour-long hike will bring you from the beach at Lake Gardner to the summit, which is the highest point overlooking the seashore in Essex County. Along the way, try to take the time to use all of your senses to mindfully soak in the nature around you as you explore.

Start by exploring the new granite block wall at the beach, walk the lakeside paths that meander along the side of Powow Hill, or Po Hill as it is known locally. This easy, self-guided hike starts at the beach, goes through the beautiful mixed forest along well marked trails to Batchelder Park at the scenic summit of Po Hill. Hopefully, you will be pausing often to notice the sights, smells, sounds and textures of the changing forest around you.

After taking in the view from the summit, from which you can see three states and the ocean, continue down the largely coniferous northern side of the hill and make your way to the rolling fields of Battis Farm on the northern edge of Amesbury. The hike will then loop you back along the old carriage road, back along the edge of the lake to where you began at the beach.
