Rope was a maritime necessity, but it was also needed in everyday life. When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published his poem “The Ropewalk” in 1858 every seaport had a building for making rope. The sights, smells, and sounds of ropemaking were a part of an everyday working waterfront.
