Description
Take a guided walking tour of the Nationally Registered Olmsted Subdivision Historic District, designed by the proposed founder of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. A local architect will guide this tour, highlighting the architectural features and Olmsted’s vision that make this a unique setting. In 1888 the Swampscott Land Trust purchased 130 acres of what was the Mudge Estate. The Trust commissioned Frederick Law Olmsted’s firm, known for designing parks such as Central Park in NYC, Niagara Reservation in Niagara Falls, and the Emerald Necklace in Boston, MA, to layout a residential neighborhood. Enter this neighborhood at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean onto Monument Ave, follow its roads around the natural topography of the landscape. See Olmsted’s vision to encourage the full utilization of the natural topography, not allowing the decorative elements to take precedence, and to harmonize the man-made structure with the picturesque landscape.
