The Indigenous people of this area hunted, fished, and grew The Three Sisters. But how did they preserve their harvest? How did they keep meat from spoiling without refrigeration? Learn to make pemmican, the original “protein bar.” Try your hand at concocting a dandelion tea. But first, explore the local native plantings at Forest River Park with Thomas Green, Elder of the Massachusett Tribe, to find out which plants you see here today continue to enrich the lives of the local Tribe – and how they can enrich yours!
This is a short (less than half a mile), guided, accessible outdoor walk on crushed gravel or paved surfaces. Please dress for the weather, wear sunblock, and bring bug spray and water. Parking fees may apply. There is no limit to the number of people we can have on the outdoor “plant walk,” however the indoor workshop portion has both space and material limitations, so please be sure to register if you want to make pemmican and tea.
