SUMMARY:Civil War Sailors and Their Ships
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture about two courageous Nahant men who se
rved on United States tall ships in the Civil War\, Andrew Camps and Mor
timer Lawrence Johnson. Andrew was the grandson of black slaves\, who fo
ught for the British in the American Revolution. They were Black Loyalis
ts. Andrew was a stone mason by trade. Mortimer was a well-educated care
er Navy man from a prominent white Nahant family. Many of his ancestors
were military men. It would seem they had very little in common. Yet\, t
he lives of these two men converged in the 1860s.
